The elderly population have always been pillars of the African American Community. In the African American community elders are looked to for knowledge, wisdom, support and guidance. Many times, they serve as the matriarchs of the family and help keep the family intact. What then happens when the matriarchs are told they are one of the most vulnerable populations when it comes to Covid-19 (Coronavirus)? The coronavirus affects many populations and the elderly is one of them. In the African American community, many elders are on fixed income. Some of them live by themselves or in nursing homes. During a time when elders are supposed to be enjoying retirement many are stressed out about the coronavirus. Social Workers must be vigilant more than ever in these times. Although the elderly population are in their later years of life every citizen deserves a chance to live. Social Workers must educate the elderly on the importance of social distancing. Social Workers can also encourage religious leaders to help the elderly in their church. In the African American community church plays a huge role for elderly people. They often come to church to get informed, congregate and socialize. Through education they must understand they are very vulnerable to Covid-19. At this time many of the elderly population might be depressed and feel isolated in nursing homes. Although social distancing is required Social Workers can encourage the elderly stay connected with their loved ones through social media. Social Workers working with the elderly should be protected by having proper PPE equipment to ensure their safety and well-being. Social Workers should be working with families by discussing the 5 stages of grief and resources families can use for their well-being. Social Workers will play a major role in checking on and overseeing the well-being and safety of the elderly during the Coronavirus. Great article, During this pandemic , it is very easy to become depressed because of isolation and loneliness. We must continue to pray to get through this tremendous storm, and come out stronger on the other side.
