The month of March is Social Work month. I have been a Social Worker for almost 11 years now, working with families and children. During my career there is never a dull day, and I am always constantly learning something new. That includes new trainings and learning new information. Social work is a career where you can work in many different program areas including the mental health field, medical field or education field to name a few. In College, social work students are told in order to be a successful Social Worker you must meet people where they are. However, isn’t that a life motto as well. To build a successful relationship with anyone you must accept them for who they are, and all that comes along with them. The same way God meets us where we are and guides us in the direction, he wants us to go in life. Pray that God leads you to the career he wants you to be in, because we all have a purpose.
When thinking of Social Workers who stay the course, Olivia Dorsey came to mind. A fierce young lady who does not mind giving you her opinion. Olivia Dorsey is my younger cousin. Ms. Dorsey will be graduating this May with her bachelor’s degree in Social Work (BSW) from Georgia State University. She has pressed through and beat the odds. She believes in turning the words can not into can. According to Ms. Dorsey she wanted to go into the field of Social Work after being told throughout the course of her life she was an inspiration to people, and she is, especially to her family and friends. She explained she has always been determined and beat the odds. According to Ms. Dorsey she would like to help children at a young age to know that they have the power to accomplish anything in life they put their minds to. Ms. Dorsey explained in life people have attempted to put her in a box because of her physical limitations, and she explained she is not having it. She explained if anything, that only makes her press harder toward her goals. According to Ms. Dorsey God has given her a different outlook on life, and she does not take life for granted and count her blessings daily.
Ms. Dorsey explained she is loved and has the support of her family. She explained her faith has played a major part in her achieving her dreams in life. According to Ms. Dorsey believing in herself is very important. Olivia Dorsey is truly, an inspiration and we can all learn something from her. After graduating she plans on pursing her Master’s Degree in Social Work. Ms. Dorsey will definitely bring something new and exciting to the field of Social Work.
